Richmond is a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. Several Fortune 500 companies call Richmond home, and many more have a strong presence here. The city has a wide range of industries including semiconductors, distribution, tobacco, transportation, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and publishing. In addition, several financial service firms have been attracted to Richmond. Virginia Biotechnology Research Park supports research and development in the area and is located on 20 acres next to Virginia Commonwealth University's (VCU) Medical College of Virginia campus. The facility is home to about 34 biotechnology, bioscience and other related companies and research institutions.
Richmond is the ideal college town, home to several established two and four-year colleges and universities. VCU is the area's largest, with two downtown campuses including the Medical College of Virginia.
